Director of Music
Position Description
Purpose:
To lead the music ministry at Second Presbyterian Church so that we may glorify God to the best of our ability.
Relationships:
Reports to the Program Executive
Works closely with the Senior Minister
Coordinates with all staff
Manages the Music Department staff
Directs the Chancel Choir and other groups as needed
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Spiritual Leadership
- to grow in the knowledge of Christ and the gospel through the faithful use of the means of grace;
- to set a godly example for those in the music ministry;
- to embrace and actively promote every aspect of the 2PC mission, and to integrate the 2PC music ministry with all 2PC ministries.
- Music Leadership
- to resource, coordinate, and encourage all music ministries at 2PC and to develop an annual ministry plan with a commensurate budget;
- to assist all 2PC ministries, including Sunday PM worship, in their need for music and worship resources;
- to hire, train, encourage, and manage the 2PC Music Department staff;
- to recruit, train, direct and manage the 2PC Chancel Choir and to work closely with the choir officers;
- to oversee the ministry of music for children and youth;
- to develop 2PC members, in their vocal and instrumental skills for use in worship, as opportunity allows.
- to develop and/or oversee vocal and instrumental ensembles (including handbells) as opportunity allows;
- to recruit and direct instrumentalists, as needed;
- to plan, rehearse, and direct special musical programs with orchestra, as opportunity allows;
- to select choral, vocal and instrumental pieces for use in Sunday morning worship services;
- (optional) to draft liturgies for use on Sunday mornings;
- to oversee the purchase and maintenance of all music and all musical equipment.
- Community Leadership
- to represent 2PC in the Memphis musical community;
- to lead in our desire to display and proclaim the gospel through the arts to Memphis and the surrounding Midsouth communities.
