Early in 2005, the staff and lay leadership of Second Presbyterian Church determined the church was exemplary in many areas of ministry, but consistently falling short in one area, evangelism.

As a result of this evaluation, an Evangelistic Planning Team (EPT) was commissioned comprised of staff and a representative cross section of lay members from the church. One of the first acts of the Team was to retain Dr. Thom Rainer, of the Rainer Group, and former Dean of the Billy Graham School of Evangelism at Southern Seminary to:

• Study the demographic make-up of the area surrounding the church
• Understand the mind and thinking of the unchurched
• Help determine the type of staff needed to lead 2PC in these change initiatives

Finally, the Team was commissioned by the Session to draft a ten-year master plan for evangelism.

The recommendation from the EPT was enthusiastically embraced and unanimously approved by the church leadership. The plan called for a DNA change of the church to become more externally focused. To help make this happen, church leadership recommended that several new positions be added to the staff to lead this change initiative.

Our Current Staff

The staff at Second Presbyterian Church is a special team of people that God has called together and gifted to minister in a particular way to the city of Memphis in this time. Under the passionate and visionary leadership of our Senior Minister, we are purposefully and strategically building God’s Kingdom. We enjoy harmony and encouragement in our daily work and the full support of our congregation. Regular staff meetings, times for devotions, prayer, retreats and strategic planning all serve to bring unity and a shared vision to the lay and staff leadership. The 2PC body enjoys a unique sense of unity.
